History
In March 2017, it was announced that China would block access to Google and Facebook, following similar actions taken against Twitter and YouTube in November 2016. Shortly after the announcement, Google and Facebook announced that they would be leaving China, citing censorship and public surveillance as the main reason for leaving. The next day, the New York Times and Financial Times, both major newspapers in the United States, were also blocked by Chinese Internet censors. The Global Times, a Chinese newspaper with ties to the Communist Party of China, argued that the move was a "matter of self-preservation" for the companies. After reports that Trump administration officials had reached out to Google, Facebook, and Twitter to change their rules on China, Google stated that the company would block "a narrow set" of sensitive terms such as Tibet, Taiwan, and Falun Gong, but not content that promoted human rights, freedom of speech or religion.
In August 2018, the PRC government began blocking Baidu's search engine in mainland China, replacing it with the locally developed search engine, Baidu Zhidao. The move was seen as part of a broader campaign against Google, with a senior official from Baidu stating that "China is undergoing a major cultural revolution, and its people need a strong, unified Internet to further promote innovation and creativity. China's new search engine is a fully national one with Chinese characteristics."
