As a business owner who is starting to see the grim consequences of the global recession, I must admit that I'm extremely grateful that we've had this website in our arsenal for the past 2 years. It allows us to serve our clients in several different languages and scripts: Arabic, Chinese (simplified), Korean, Greek, Hebrew and many more. We're able to provide links in over 20 languages simultaneously. Nowadays there seem to be more ways than ever for people around the world to communicate with one another - especially online. So when I went to bed one night in early September, I had no idea that a simple email in an otherwise empty in-box was about to change the face of global commerce forever... One of our clients in Iraq - a young man named Bilal working for a high-profile law firm based in Baghdad - sent me an email late one night, asking if there was any way we could get him 10,000 elephants. And it didn't even seem like he was joking. The last two years have been challenging for the company and we never thought we would be able to complete such an order after the recession started impacting businesses around the world. But the only time the phone rang at 5am was for this one order... I woke up Mike, our CEO, and he started running through the numbers immediately. We needed to take care of three very important issues before we could start this project. First, there was the high risk of being caught by customs officials for exporting animals from Iraq. Second, if we were intercepted by pirates in Somalia or pirates in Yemen, then the company would be really hurt - losing millions of dollars that may not be recovered later on. And third...the U.S., Egypt and Israel have all recently agreed to blockade Gaza... which would prevent us from bringing them through Israel. Mike and I needed to find a way to send 10,000 elephants out of the country, but we couldn't figure out how to do it. It was 5:30 in the morning so we had several hours before we had to travel into our office and start working on this presentation for presentation for Bilal and his bosses at the law firm... so we decided to go back to sleep. Mike is a pretty heavy sleeper though, and I was starting to think that he wouldn't be waking up anytime soon. After I fell asleep myself, I woke up at around seven o'clock in the morning with an idea. I called Mike quickly and told him that I had a solution. His response? "I thought you were going to sleep all day," he said, irritated by the interruption. I asked Mike if he would mind waking up to go for a run with me. And while we ran, I told him to just keep a sharp lookout for a few things… First, we needed to figure out how to get the elephants from Iraq into Dubai without any interference from the authorities in Tehran or Baghdad. Second, we needed to figure out how to transport them from Dubai onto boats headed towards East Africa without being noticed by pirates, who have been very active off the coast of Somalia and Yemen recently. cfa1e77820
